Jamaica Kincaid’s ‘Girl’ and Charlotte Gilman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ are two stories centered around the experiences of women in society. Through the use of space, they exemplify ways in which society confines women, albeit from different points of view.Kincaid’s ‘Girl’ made its first debut in the New Yorker in 1978. Unlike the typical format of stories, this story takes the form of a single ongoing sentence where the narrator advices a younger girl. The narrator, who comes off as a mother or someone in a position of moral authority over the younger girl, gives a set of rules, while the narratee is barely given an opportunity to express herself.This story buttresses the highly performative aspect of gender and the ‘making of woman’; it is apparent that there is a power dynamic where the addressed is at a disadvantage and thereby confined to the limits of societal expectations, similar to how claustrophobic spaces give little room for movement. In the narrator’s rules, we see the traditional expectations of women in patriarchal societies such as ‘this how to sew on a button’, ‘this is how you set a table for dinner’, ‘this is how you sweep a whole house’ and so forth. Throughout the story, the narrator gives advice that will groom the young woman into the normative ideal woman. These instructions are in line with the social norms of gender where women are expected to cook, clean, take care of the home and be docile. Women are taught in such societies that subservience to men is important and their self-expression should be carefully centred around men’s egos. This can be seen in this story when the narrator emphasizes how the young girl should behave in the presence of men.In the typical binary postcolonial society where men are considered dominant, women inevitably become acquiescent as a direct result of having less social capital. In other words, women are not only regulated in their homes but also on a large scale societally. Such rules and expectations restrict self-expression by requiring women to act in a certain way - no room for personal aspirations or desires outside of tradition. The narratee’s life is being defined with little room for rebellion. The daughter’s first rebuttal ‘but I don’t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school’ is ignored to signify that society will not reward compliance as that is what is expected of a woman. The fear of not being the ideal woman is used to keep the narratee in check. As can be seen with the last line, the narrator responds to her question ‘but what if the baker won’t let me feel the bread?’ by saying ‘you mean to say that after all you are really going to be the kind of woman who the baker won’t let near the bread?’.Society is the metaphorical claustrophobic space in this story; women are kept in a box and are expected to stay there by stifling any form of individuality. It is clear that the narrator identifies the potential for frustration from all the restrictions and gives rules that indicate a ‘transgressive potential of performance’ (Janes “Kincaid”). For instance, the narrator mentions “this is how you smile to someone you don’t like too much; this is how you smile to someone you don’t like at all”. In the same way tight spaces give little room for manipulation, this transgressive loophole shows the narrator is aware and understands that gender performance is restrictive. Thus, there is an attempt to incorporate advice that allows for some authenticity. As a reader, one is put in the position of the narratee by being on the receiving end of the advice. With every phrase, the reader feels more locked in and desires begin to feel out of grasp. The momentum and exactitude of the instructions coupled with the judgemental statement at the end, causes one to feel overwhelmed for the symbolic lack of breathing space. This story can be seen as a societal analogy of a tight, crowded and windowless room.On the contrary, Charlotte Gilman’s story involves a concrete physical space. The Yellow Wallpaper was first published in 1892 and was initially interpreted as a horror story . In 1973, 5 years before Kincaid’s Girl was published, readers began to approach this story from a feminist perspective as this was a period when feminist ideals began to surface as a movement. Similar to how the references to weather, landscape, agronomy and cooking provide a sense of rootedness in Girl, The Yellow Wallpaper makes use of descriptors to establish the location of this story. It takes place in a lonely ‘colonial mansion’ that is ‘quite alone, standing well back from the road, quite three miles from the village’ . This lets us know the building is secluded from the busyness of the town, even though she can see people from her window. In the same vein as Kincaid’s girl, there is a power dynamic present between the narrator and her husband who is representative of society.The narrator in this story is seemingly suffering from post-partum depression and her husband, who is a physician, rents an untenanted building for three months to aid her recovery. He chooses the nursery as her room and as aptly described by Loralee MacPike, “the fact that the narrator’s prison-room is a nursery indicates her status in society. The woman is legally a child; socially, economically, and philosophically she must be led by an adult — her husband; and therefore the nursery is an appropriate place to house her” (Janes “Gilman”). The pattern of infantilization is also apparent in her husband’s choice of language. He refers to her as ‘little girl’. Typically, children are not always able to make informed decisions and require constant guidance. By infantilizing his wife, the husband suggests she is incapable of making independent choices and he is in the best position to judge what is in her best interest. When the narrator comments about her appetite to correct the physician’s notion that it is improving, he dismissively replies ‘bless her little heart’. This is the same way the young girl’s statement about not singing benna in Sunday school is dismissed in Kincaid. Both the narrator in The Yellow Wallpaper and the young girl are confined by people with higher societal authority who believe they have the best judgement. Not only is the narrator physically restricted to her physical setting, she is also mentally and expressively restricted by her husband’s stubbornness and gaslighting.There are various facets as to how the setting is a claustrophobic space. In describing the nursery she rests in, she mentions the furniture is ‘inharmonious’, the floor is ‘scratched’, the wallpaper is ‘torn off in spots’ and the sides of the bed posts had been ‘gnawed at’. The interior design of living spaces often have the ability to affect one’s state of mind. The way one would feel discouraged coming home to a messy room after a long day of work, discordant furniture also has the effect of causing one to feel overwhelmed and caged in. This in turn affects mood, behaviour and can cause irritability. This is highlighted when the narrator describes the wallpaper pattern as ‘infuriating’ and ‘torturing’. Her suggestion to move to one of the more visually pleasing rooms downstairs is turned down by her husband. He also monitors her activity within the nursery. When she gets up at night to take a closer look at the wallpaper, he tells her not go ‘walking about like that’ because she’ll get cold. He speaks to her as though she is not a grown woman capable of basic safety. Even within the enclosed physical space, her movement and will are restricted. In contrast with Kincaid’s girl, transgressive action is not encouraged here but the narrator does so regardless — she lies constantly about her thoughts and emotions to her husband to retain some form of authenticity. Although she is confined to such a displeasing space, she would rather it be her than her newborn. This consideration shows she recognizes the impact of such an environment on one’s expression and movement and would not want her child to experience it. Relief from living in a confined space does not stop when one steps out either, because they know they will have to return. This is why when she walks into other parts of the house and when she goes riding, she believes the smell of the wallpaper follows her around.A major part of this story that is significant to the topic of claustrophobic spaces is the yellow wallpaper in the room. At the start of the story, she vividly describes her disdain for the pattern and mentions it commits ‘every artistic sin’. She goes further to label the color ‘repellant, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow’. Eventually, she begins to see what she believes is a woman stuck behind the incongruous pattern of the wallpaper. The narrator states this woman is subdued during the day, which metaphorically suggests how women are expected to be complacent as they go about their daily lives. She states that she sees her during the day on the roads beneath the trees and walking down the lane. I believe this refers to regular women going about their business, but she sees them as submissive women ‘creeping’ around, being careful to remain within societal standards. The only safe haven for eccentricities are in the dark, i.e. the only safe time to pause performative expectations is when no one is watching. It is not until she discovers this entrapped woman that she feels she has something to look forward to. This also shows a potential side effect of claustrophobic spaces. When one is repressed for too long, it can take a mental toll. In this case, the narrator begins to hallucinate.While her narration stops being reliable, the woman stuck in the wallpaper remains relevant as it mirrors her own situation — being stuck in the nursery and confined by poorly informed judgements. She convinces herself that the woman in the wallpaper desires to be freed from its confines and makes it her mission to do so on the last day of their stay. Upon seeing the torn wallpaper, Jennie, her husband’s sister, laughs and says she wouldn’t mind ripping it herself. In a prior scene, she also catches Jennie staring at the wallpaper intently. The two brief moments of solidarity between both women suggests a joint understanding — and empathy on the part of Jennie. It comes off as Jennie subtly acknowledging the enforced domestic state they are both in, but being powerless to do anything. Tight spaces tend to feel like the walls are closing in and the narrator’s frustration peaks when she finally tears apart the wallpaper. Ironically, at the end of the story, she locks herself in but states she ‘got out at last’. This goes to prove her transgressive act of rebellion was the escape she needed.To conclude, both stories contextualize claustrophobic spaces by presenting as the similar realities of women across societies — suppressed, domesticated and often infantilized. Acts of self expression are often rebuked and seen as rebellious. There is little to no room for individuality, just like tight spaces have little room for movement.        The systematic oppression of women is common across various aspects of our society and this includes prisons. In a bid to shed light on the treatment of incarcerated women, Kelly Hanna-Moffat, a professor in the University of Toronto, explores the modern prison systems for women. She particularly analyzes how the introduction of women as staff in the prison system brings about reformist modifications and new interactive norms by incorporating maternalism and feminism into penal reformative measures (19). However, she makes a clear distinction between maternalism and feminism by stating they could be exclusive. Maternal reformers such as Elizabeth Fry commonly chose to not identify with the feminist movement (25). Though, she states that those who lobbied for women’s rights were often at the forefront of the advocacy for reforms.       Hannah-Moffat starts with a brief breakdown of historical attempts at reforms and expatiates on how prisons were historically set up to suit male specifications through the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. This negatively affected imprisoned women as the patriarchal prison system failed to accept that they would have to cater to their needs separately from the male prisoners. Using Foucault’s argument as a reference, she recognizes that previous scholars did not realize or acknowledge that “spiritual and maternal rationalities play a critical role in shaping the governance of women prisoners.” (22).        In addition, Hannah-Moffat expands on different demographic power structures that existed between women in this system. She gives a brief history of maternal power and its dichotomy of the ideal woman and the fallen woman. The ideal woman being society’s stereotypical woman, one that is family oriented and interested in the wellbeing of society as opposed to the fallen woman who did not hold such virtues. Elizabeth Fry, who was privileged to be acknowledged by society as one of the ideal women made use of both maternal and pastoral power.      Foucault defines pastoral power as an individualized “technique orientated towards individuals and intended to rule them in a continuous and permanent way” (33). Foucault likened the person in possession of such power to the biblical idea of a shepherd catering to the needs of his sheep through personalized methods. Hannah-Moffat uses this definition to make a connection between Elizabeth Fry’s interest in the fallen women in the penal system and the beginning of reforms in prisons. The first significant reform is marked with the increased requests for soap by the women in jail so they could keep their kids clean. Following this, was the development of schools for the children and subsequently for the women. A major driving force for Elizabeth Fry’s desire to help the incarcerated women was her worry that the children of these women would end up as hazards to the society as a result of being around their mothers (37). Noticeably, reform was centered around domestic issues during this period. This eventually broadened to include political and socio-economic activity in the following century (39). Fry spearheaded the push for women staff in prisons based on the premise of maternalism and the potential for male staff to misuse their power by abusing the women entrusted in their care. She also makes sure to recognize the impact of the influence of the upper and middle class women in reforming penal governance.        Hannah-Moffat uses the first chapter to show the role of women in progressive prison reforms. Although she explicitly identifies the need to combine various powers together to achieve reforms, she downplays the role of the patriarchal system in slowing down the efforts of women reformers. Though she does state that those with feminist ideologies were more likely to challenge the system for reforms, she does not emphasize the similarities between feminism and Elizabeth Fry’s beliefs about what women should be doing. Elizabeth Fry believed women should be given the opportunity to get an education and skills to improve themselves. She also recognized the economic and political power women held in society and used it as a leverage for reforms. Furthermore, Hannah-Moffat fails to state the probable consequences of reforms to women. For instance, the increased comfort may contribute to a rising crime rate amongst women living in poverty who may see prison as a better lifestyle option. Toward the end of the book she states that more women are being classified as risky as opposed to a decade ago where they mostly proved a risk to themselves and not society at large (186).        The following chapter dives into the adoptions and adaptations in the penal policy during the nineteenth and twentieth century. At this period in time, there were women wardens and efforts to improve the brutal prison conditions women were subject to. It was recognized and accepted that the prison system was one designed to accommodate men thus there was a push to restructure a system that was suitable for women (51). While chapter two features a push to a different penal structure for women, chapter three is where it comes to actualization. The incarcerated women were moved from a female unit at Kingston Penitentiary where a majority of them were placed to a Prison for Women. The following chapters focus on the rising qualifications needed to secure posts as women wardens or facilitators. In the conclusion, Hannah-Moffet rightly notes that a few of the changes are yet to be overtly addressed but instead are “neutralized to present the appearance of change without addressing many underlying problems” (199). In other words, she points out that federal systems do a good job in concealing the problems to a minimum in order to disguise their inefficiencies in handling them.ReferenceHannah-Moffat, Kelly.        Over the last few years, up until 2018, the Liberal Party of Ontario has consistently been in power (Elections Ontario 2018). During its leadership, Bill 148 - a plan for fair workplaces and better jobs – was passed. This bill sought to amend the identified gaps in Ontario’s workforces through remedies formed to create a more just and unprejudiced environment for employees and employers. Some of the changes highlighted in Bill 148 include the increase of the hourly wage to $14 per hour (with a proposed increase to $15 per hour in January 2019), an enforcement of the equal pay for equal work rule, extended accessibility to job-protected emergency days, an increase of the range of paid vacation and so forth (Ontario 2018). More notably, an accommodation was made for victims of domestic or sexual abuse which grants between 10 days to 15 weeks of leave if a worker or their child has been threatened or abused (Ontario 2018). These proposed changes, some of which are already in effect, also have exceptions. Worthy of notice is that demographic characteristics such as race, gender and status explicitly are not qualified as a premise for a gap in employee wages (Ontario 2018). For this paper, gender is of specific importance.        However, the general elections that took place in June 2018 resulted in a transition of power from the Liberal Party to the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. Similarly, a bill titled Making Ontario Open for Business Act has been brought forward and a lot of its proposed changes are counter-intuitive to those implemented in Bill 148. Legislations such as the increase to $15 wage per hour and paid absence for sick days have been retracted while changes in regard to parity, paid vacation and domestic/sexual abuse remain the same (Mojtehedzadeh 2018). However, as opposed to Bill 148 that permits employees to ask for a review of their pay in a case where they feel they are being underpaid for the work they do (Ontario 2018), Bill 47 withdraws this authorization. This means workers who are getting paid less for the same amount of work as their colleagues are not allowed to file complaints (Mojtehedzadeh 2018). If the bill is passed, it is more likely to adversely affect women in the workforce.The Gender Pay Gap        Research has shown that pay, to a large extent, is affected by gender. As defined by the Canadian Women’s Foundation, gender pay gap essentially refers to “the difference in earnings between women and men in the workplace” (Canadian Women’s Foundation 2018). The primary cause of the gender pay gap is occupational sex segregation i.e. the concentration of workers of a certain demographic feature (gender) into different occupations. Mostly, the case is that men are being paid more than women and sometimes it is for the same job. Gender pay gap may differ depending on what is being used to measure it i.e. either wage per hour or earnings over a duration of time. In Canada, the gender gap in annual earnings is somewhat significant while the gap in wages is considerably lower (Kervin 2018). Canadian women statistically earn almost 30% less than men do (Canadian Women’s Foundation 2018). This is partly as a result of women being more likely to have non-linear careers and also due to the tendency of women working fewer hours than men for a number of reasons (majorly childcare and social culture amongst others).   What is the effect of these bills on the Gender Pay Gap?       As stated in Bill 148, companies should not “pay one employee less than another employee, because their employment status is different, if both people perform equal work.” (Ontario 2018). While the differences in status here refer mostly to the type of job held by the employee e.g. full time, seasonal, part time, etc., this legislation also explicitly states that gender is not an admissible premise for unequal pay. Furthermore, it grants the consent to challenge the employer if this rule is not being implemented in the workplace. This makes gender parity in the workplace seem more achievable because it will allow women challenge any sort of pay discrimination that is seemingly based on gender and not skill or work. As employers are required to respond to such requests with an updated pay rate or a well-informed analysis of the gap (Ontario 2018), it makes it harder for companies and organizations to marginalize women. The repeal of this change by the probable legislation of Bill 47 will undo this great leap towards egalitarianism in the workplace. The equal pay for genders is still enforced but with this bill, women will not be able to challenge their employers when they do not implement this rule. In situations where women are being paid less for the same work as their male counterparts, they will no longer have the leverage to question this injustice and be assured a remedy or at least, a response.The Glass Ceiling       Women and men tend to be promoted at the same rate, but this is only up to a certain stage in their respective occupations. Once that point is reached, men are more likely to get promoted to senior positions (Kervin 2018). Regardless of the work they put in, it is more difficult for women to get past this point that is if they do at all. Simply put, the gendered glass ceiling is a prejudiced barrier that stops women from reaching positions of high authority in their careers simply because they are women. For instance, female professors tend to be less likely to get promoted to full professors in comparison with male professors (Kervin 2018). However, there is a gradual (and occasionally stagnant) trend of women having increased representation in senior management positions. Relationship between both bills and the Glass Ceiling       Different organizations use either or both promotion models: the seniority model and the merit model (Kervin 2018). The seniority model considers years spent at the job and promotes those with unbroken streaks of employment in the organization they work in. On the other hand, the merit model is a more rational approach and promotes workers based on how well they perform their allocated tasks. As part of its exceptions regarding “equal pay for equal work”, Bill 148 plainly states that this change does not apply if the difference in pay is based on the merit or seniority model (Ontario 2018). This is problematic for a variety of reasons. Though the seniority model is purportedly better for women because of the reduced likelihood of gendered discrimination and/or bias, there are factors such as child rearing (which spirals down into outdated experience) that cause women to have non-linear careers and lapses in their work experience. The ambiguity of the merit model also puts women at the shorted end of the stick as the ‘merit’ is based on assessment which could be subjective especially with the overt homophily in organization culture. The exception of unequal pay based on either of these models is unfair to women because there is a possibility within either model that women may be disadvantaged. This exception provides the opportunity for employers to mask gender-based discrimination under the guise of either model of promotion. Notwithstanding, Bill 47 does not repeal protected leave for domestic or sexual abuse. As women are more likely to be victims of abuse, the protected leave protects their jobs which is beneficial where the seniority model is being used. Yet, Bill 47 reduces the number of emergency days granted to employees. Women reportedly are more likely to take leave days for familial responsibilities and if Bill 148 is annulled, the increased inflexibility of organizations may lead to more women cutting their chances of getting promoted to senior positions of authority by opting out of the workforce (Kervin 2018). To conclude, bills have similar chances of being detrimental or beneficial to women due to lapses in the regulations and amendments. The government of Ontario can create a bill that specifically aims to address and remedy the systematic and institutional marginalization of women in the workforce to get rid of these side-effects of the passed legislations.
