Alec is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Pacific Women’s Health Research Unit at the University of Auckland. He is a senior consultant in O&G at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland. He is completing a PhD into building research capacity in the Pacific Islands.
Alec was the Chair of the NZ Committee of RANZCOG and has been on the Council of both RANZCOG and AOFOG. He was the President of the Pacific Medical Association and has been the founder and on governance boards of some Pacific primary health care organisations in Auckland NZ. He has also been on various national health committees of the Ministry of Health.
His research interests are postnatal depression, stillbirths, gestational diabetes, sexually transmitted infections, Vitamin D in pregnancy and building research capacity. He has published 42 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has research collaborations and networks with teams across NZ Universities and across the Pacific. Alec led a team that wrote the medical curriculum for the Faculty of Medicine National University of Samoa. He is about to complete a PhD in building research capacity in the Pacific. As part of his capacity building work, Alec has founded and is the Chief-in-Editor of the Pacific Journal of Reproductive Health and is cultivating a group of that will form a Reproductive Health Research Network in the Pacific.
