Development of Python-based software for simulating continuous binary
distillation system using McCabe-Thiele approach
Abstract
This paper shows a python based GUI simulation software, named DSoft,
which underlies the analytical approach to the McCabe-Thiele graphical
method to simulate the equilibrium stage model for a continuous feed
binary distillation column. The software, DSoft, calculates theoretical
stages, actual stages at all ranges of Murphree tray efficiency, feed
tray location, and boil-up ratio for any given input of feed quality,
product compositions, and reflux ratio. Along with the analytical
solution, it plots the McCabe-Thiele diagram, Composition Profile, and
Feed Tray Optimisation curve. Moreover, two case studies are carried out
and the results are verified with existing commercial software. As a
result of the case study simulation, further research studies,
observations & inferences are carried out. DSoft is a simple,
compatible, platform-independent, standalone software that can be used
for educational, research & development, industrial purposes, etc.,
demonstrating both analytical & graphical approach with a detailed
solution to the user.
