While Humphrey's conceptualisation of subject  librarianship sets a differentiation between extensive subject knowledge through  a degree and general subject which may not need a degree. Hardy and Corrall  (2007) give an example of British universities where subject librarians do not  have a degree in the subject which they are assigned. While given an example of  where subject librarians have a degree in LIS and a degree in the respective  subject.
