Embedded  Librarianship is a descendant of subject librarianship in academic libraries.  Hine (2013) claims that embedded librarianship originated as a solution to the  problems that were encountered in subject librarianship such as poor  bibliographic access to collections and inconsistent physical access. Authors  such as also claim that embedded librarianship was established because academic  librarians needed to collaborate with members of their faculties instead of  merely passively providing collections. While authors such as have claimed that  embedded librarianship has been developed through the growth of ICTs requiring  the need for academic librarians to participate in platforms where their  communities interact.
