The system has two basic architectural components: knowledge base and an inference (reasoning) mechanism. The knowledge base is a structured collection of expert medical knowledge used by the CDSS. The inference mechanism is a set of computer algorithms used to process clinical signs, symptoms and laboratory test results in relation to the knowledge base.
