The use of the wireless head
impact sensor (XPatch) was novel in that it is an attachable patch
incorporating the accelerometer and gyroscope into the structure. The XPatch
weighs 2 grams and is attached to the head over the mastoid process behind the
ear by and adhesive to the skin enabling the sensor to be utilised in
non-helmeted sports such as rugby union.
