\label{sec:conclusions}  In this paper we walked thorugh the classical smFRET burst analysis describing  the different steps and illustrating  how to perform them with FRETBursts. Furthermore we presented several novel concepts implemented in FRETBursts that   can lead to significantly more accurate results in specific situations:   time-dependent background estimation, background dependent burst search threshold,
