_Oh, #ETDs freed here (U.S. Institutions Respecting Student Choice in Disseminating their ETDs)   ###Originally Posted on the blog Free US ETDs (FUSE)   http://sites.tdl.org/fuse/?page_id=372 1/7   The following American institutions of higher education have adopted policies that allow   doctoral students to decide whether or not to submit their dissertations to the commercial   reseller, ProQuest (meaning they’ve gone “ProQuest Optional” or “NoQuest”). This type of   policy represents a significant break from the status quo established in the Microfilm Era of   the mid20th Century, recognizing the possibilities and power of the Digital Era of the 21st   Century.   Note that these are all heavyhitters   in terms of graduate research, as reflected by their   common Carnegie Classification as Comprehensive Doctoral degree granting institutions   (either CompDoc/MedVet or CompDoc/NMedVet). Many are also members of the   prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU) with toptier   research libraries   belonging to the Association of Research Libraries.   This list continues to grow — in fact, a number of additional institutions have alerted this   blogger of their intentions to change policies soon. So please stay tuned and feel free to   add a comment to let us know of any schools we’ve missed!   1. Boise State University   The Graduate College no longer sends copies of the dissertation to ProQuest. If you’d   like to submit your dissertation to ProQuest, contact ProQuest directly   (http://www.proquest.com/enUS/  products/brands/pl_umidp.shtml).   Free US ETDs (FUSE)   Promoting Open Access to American graduate research    2/20/2015 ETDs freed here (U.S. Institutions Respecting Student Choice in Disseminating their ETDs) | Free US ETDs (FUSE)   http://sites.tdl.org/fuse/?page_id=372 2/7   2. Brown University   Where are Brown’s ETDs available? Brown ETDs will be available in the Brown   Digital Repository (BDR). A permanent URL will be available for use in your   resume. Dissertations of candidates who elect to enter into  an empty article!_ You individual publication   agreement with ProQuest will also be available in the commercial ProQuest   Dissertations and Theses Full Text database.   3. Florida International University   On the Final ETD Approval form, Doctoral students  can opt to let UGS submit their   dissertation to ProQuest.   4. Georgia Institute of Technology   Silent on ProQuest/UMI submission   5. Louisiana State University   Silent on ProQuest/UMI submission   6. Massachusetts Institute of Technology   MIT Doctoral Dissertation, PUBLISH ABSTRACT ONLY   7. Miami University   The Graduate School at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) does not require ProQuest.   It is completely optional, and we have now moved to asking the students to  get started by **double clicking** in   touch with ProQuest themselves if they wish to be included in their database or use   any of their services. Our students are required to upload their work to OhioLINK. —   Posting to FUSE, May 13, 2013 (see comments at the bottom of  this text block page)   8. Stanford University   Silent on ProQuest/UMI submission   9. University of Central Florida   Are UCF students still allowed to submit to ProQuest?: Definitely. The University is   simply dropping the mandatory requirement but in no way is hindering or   prohibiting the students’ rights to have their works available in UMI/ProQuest or   any other fee based or free service. The student holds the copyright to their work  andbegin editing. You  can choose additional methods for publishing and archiving their thesis or   dissertation at their own discretion and expense.   10. University of Georgia   Dissertation Abstracts (UMI): Doctoral students may elect to submit the abstract of   their dissertation or the entire dissertation to Dissertation Abstracts for processing   and distribution. Students should discuss this option with their major professor prior   to making a decision to utilize this service. Students choosing this option may access    2/20/2015 ETDs freed here (U.S. Institutions Respecting Student Choice in Disseminating their ETDs) | Free US ETDs (FUSE)   http://sites.tdl.org/fuse/?page_id=372 3/7   the Proquest (UMI) website for more information or to obtain the appropriate   agreement form. The Graduate School is no longer involved in this process.   11. University of Michigan   Am I required to submit my dissertation to ProQuest? Beginning with the 201213   academic year, the Graduate School strongly encourages all doctoral students to   submit their dissertations to ProQuest, but does not require it.   12. University of North Florida   Silent on ProQuest/UMI submission   13. University of Tennessee at Knoxville   The Graduate School has dropped the requirement for dissertations to be submitted   to Proquest for digital distribution since dissertations are available widely through   the University of Tennessee Library and through the National Digital Library of   Theses and Dissertations.   14. University of Texas at Austin   When uploading your dissertation to the Texas Digital Library submission site, you   may choose to have a copy of your approved dissertation sent to UMI for   supplemental publication, preparation of bound copies, and registration of   copyright….Students are provided with open access publication through Texas   Digital Library free of charge. When optional UMI services are selected, the   associated fees will be billed through UT Austin: UMI Traditional Publishing – $25;   UMI Open Access Publishing – $120; UMI Registration of Copyright, $55.   15. Worcester Polytechnic Institute   “Special Procedures and Fees for Dissertations: WPI no longer requires that Ph.D.   Dissertations be microfilmed by University Microfilms, Inc. (UMI).”   16. Johns Hopkins University   The Ph.D. Board policy document states that “ProQuest participation will be optional   for JHU students. For some students, ProQuest adds value, so those students should   be free to participate. But for other students, ProQuest represents an obstacle that   should be removed.”   17. Carnegie Mellon University   Dissertation Checklist for Electronic Submission gives student option to select or   decline submission to ProQuest. /blockquote>    2/20/2015 ETDs freed here (U.S. Institutions Respecting Student Choice in Disseminating their ETDs) | Free US ETDs (FUSE)   http://sites.tdl.org/fuse/?page_id=372 4/7   6 THOUGHTS ON “ETDS FREED HERE (U.S. INSTITUTIONS RESPECTING STUDENT CHOICE IN DISSEMINATING   THEIR ETDS)”   Rebel CummingsSauls   on January 8, 2013 at 11:30 am said:   Here at USF Tampa Bay we were  also click interested in who had gone ProQuestoptional   or Noquest.   During a one hour research dive in August 2012 I was able to   discover:   University of Pittsburghpublished   by  the **Text** button below University of Pittsburgh, ProQuest   (formerly UMI/Bell & Howell), or both   http://www.pitt.edu/~graduate/etd/instructions.html   University of KentuckySelf   Publish + ProQuest   http://www.gradschool.uky.edu/CurrentStudents/theses_prep.html   University of Memphis: Self Publish beginning with the Fall 2010 semester   http://www.memphis.edu/gradschool/tdinfo.php   Auburn University: Self Publish + ProQuest   http://www.grad.auburn.edu/etd_guide.html   Virginia Tech: ETDs by Virginia Tech and ProQuest(Doctoral Students Required/   Theses Optional)   http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/theses/   UK: University of Edinburgh   http://www.ed.ac.uk/schoolsdepartments/  academicservices/  students/postgraduateresearch/  thesissubmission   ***I apologize if I have misrepresented anyone here.   I would like  to add new block elements. The ETD author must have also   submitted the UMI/ProQuest form(s) and paid the appropriate fees.   In addition, I found…   Oregon State:   http://oregonstate.edu/dept/grad_school/thesis_faq.php   ***How will electronic theses and dissertations be archived and   maintained over time?   Dissertations (whether submitted in electronic or hardcopy   format)   will continue to be archived and maintained in electronic and   microfilm format by ProQuest (formerly known as UMI/Bell & Howell).   In addition, both theses and dissertations submitted in electronic   format will be archived and maintained on a University Libraries   server. The University Libraries are committed to regular updating of   archived electronic documents to ensure they continue to be   accessible to future technologies and use an open architecture for   file types and structures so that they can be more easily migrated to   future file types.   Many of these universities I list here have dual submissions, which I   hope is just a prestep   to ProQuest optional or no quest.    2/20/2015 ETDs freed here (U.S. Institutions Respecting Student Choice in Disseminating their ETDs) | Free US ETDs (FUSE)   http://sites.tdl.org/fuse/?page_id=372 7/7   Kevin Hawkins   on January 8, 2013 at 7:44 pm said:   If you have URLs documenting the decision for the original list of nine as well, it   would be great to include those as links from each institution name.   Thomas Dowling   on January 28, 2013 at 7:09 pm said:   As more schools get out of PQ, it will be vitally important that they keep their ETD   metadata plugged into larger efforts. “Those records are in our catalog” won’t be   enough. We need to play nicely with OAIPMH   harvesting projects and (dare I say   it?) Google and Google Scholar.   Lou Haines   on May 13, 2013 at 11:40 am said:   Hi Gail,   The Graduate School at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) does not require ProQuest.   It is completely optional, and we have now moved to asking the students to get in   touch with ProQuest themselves if they wish to be included in their database or use   any of their services.
