To detect the ears,
we \citet{gonzalez2014kinect}'s study, they apply a preprocessing to the depth image just as we do to detect the nose and eyes. From the depth image, e.g. the one showed in Fig. 13(a), a depth filter is applied to remove the background and compute just the fore-ground where the user is. Fig. 13(b) shows a depth image after applying the depth filter. In this image, all the background is removed and only the face and a fraction of the torso of the user appear.
