##Chapter 1: Exploring how social status organizes the brain   ###AIM 1: To examine how the brain is organized over time following an opportunity to ascend in social status.   I will determine how functional networks change in the brain as animals transition from a subordinate (SUB) to a dominant (DOM) social status. I will then test how this process is impacted by SSH antagonists.   ###AIM 2: Examine how the animals respond to social challenge and opportunity at different stages of their transition.   I will expose transitioning animals to either a territorial challenge or a reproductive opportunity at different stages in their transition and examine cytochrome oxidase and egr-1 levels.     ##Chapter 2: Community level consequences of social transition   ###AIM 1: To examine how the behavior of one individual can be transmitted throughout a social network (short term effects).   I will introduce a SUB male into a community where he is the largest male, disrupting the current dominance hierarchy. I will measure the social network as it changes over time, post introduction. One hour after the introduced male has gained DOM status, I will kill harvest the entire community and process their brains for in situ.   ###AIM 2: To examine how the behavior of one individual can be transmitted throughout a social network (long-term effects).   I will manipulate one individual DOM male with either estradiol antagonist or agonist which will cause him to become more or less aggressive. I will then monitor the social network. After 4 days I will kill the community members and use qPCR to examine expression of sex steroid hormone receptors cytochrome oxidase subunits from punches centered on different areas of the SDMN.
