Studies of the Adriatic Sea started in the early eighteenth century, although a few observations are reported earlier, and essentially concerned the coastal biological phenomenology, whereas open-sea observations began in the nineteenth century.
The Adriatic Sea has a long history of oceanography studies. Investigations into the physical processes taking place there began in the 19th century (Lorenz, 1863; Wolf and Luksch, 1887). Since then, there have been many regional
studies as well as several reviews, the most recent ones being those by Buljan and Zore-Armanda (1976) and Franco et al. (1982). In the years since these reviews, studies. More recently, extensive in situ measurements have been made and remote sensing techniques utilizing satellite data have been applied to the Adriatic Sea. In addition, several analytical and numerical models have been used to interpret various aspects of the Adriatic dynamics.
