To foster the comparison of results between labs, in  ITU-R BT.500 and ITU-T P.919 the experimental setup is prescribed in great  detail. However, in the literature category ratings have been shown to be  severely biased when it comes to the question of quantitative differences  between subjective impressions. This means that numerical quality values thus  derived in the psychophysics lab might not warrant the operation of subtraction  that we are used to perform with numbers. In terms of measurement theory the  reliability of the measurements might be good but their validity is  questionable, if we expect them to result in a so-called interval scale. The  fact that the ITU took great pains to lay down the exact way of choosing and  presenting test materials might therefore be seen as an effort to keep the  unavoidable bias constant rather than to remove it.
