<div>For the past few years, the discussion on where to put wind turbines in the Netherlands has been becoming ever more prominent. There are three options for wind turbines: inland, offshore and coastal. Offshore and coastal wind turbines have a higher electricity production, but are more expensive to build and maintain. Inland wind turbines often lead to large NIBMY effects, where people do not want to have turbines in the area of their homes. Coastal turbines provide a lot of electricity, but the amount of coast in the Netherlands is limited and there are a lot of aesthetic objections to them, especially in the tourist branch.&nbsp;<br></div><div><br></div><div>Nevertheless, turbines are often considered a relatively cheap way of providing renewable electricity and the fact that it is a proven technology makes it more reliable than other, newer technologies. The amount of area that is reserved in the model for wind turbines is considerable. 1,000 km2 inland, twice as much offshore and 100 km of coast is reserved for wind turbines. In 2012 about 100 km2 inland wind, 50 km of coastal area and 38 km2 of offshore wind was built in the Netherlands.<br></div>
