Energy sources

In 2012, the Netherlands still depend heavily on fossil fuels for electricity production, space heating and transport. A way of reducing fossil fuel dependency and becoming more sustainable is adding biofuels to the fossil fuel mix. This way a transition can happen gradually and there is little to no change in infrastructure needed. Bio-diesel and bio-gasoline can be mixed in in order to make transport more sustainable and bio-gas can be added to the gas network for space heating.

However, biofuel plantations require a lot of space and biofuel plantations could compete with food production. Therefore, it is not reasonable to use too much biofuel for electricity production. Wind energy can be used as a good basis for electricity generation in the Netherlands. Gas can still be used, as it is the fossil fuel with the less greenhouse gas emission per amount of electricity produced. Coal has the larges emission of greenhouse gas per amount of electricity produced. This means that phasing coal out of the energy mix has a high impact on greenhouse gas emissions.
