OZ3

Ozone is formed when an oxygen radical reacts with a molecule of dioxygen:

\begin{equation} O+O_{2}\Rightarrow O_{3}\nonumber \\ \end{equation}
  • Oxygen radicals are formed by the dissociation of \(O_{2}\), which requires an electric charge or UV

  • Explains tang of ozone near electrics

  • Ozone in troposphere is formed from reactions in photochemical smog

    • Action of UV on nitrogen dioxide

  • In the stratosphere, oxygen can photodissociate:

\begin{gather*} O_{2}+hv\Rightarrow O+O \\ O+O_{2}\Rightarrow O_{3} \\ O+O\Rightarrow O_{2} \\ O+O_{3}\Rightarrow O_{2}+O_{2} \\ O_{3}+hv\Rightarrow O_{2}+O \\ \end{gather*}

This radical chain reaction is responsible for the screening of UV.
