Isomerism

Two molecules that have the same molecular formula but differ in atomic arrangement are isomers of each other.

  • Differemt physical properties

  • Often different chemical properties

Structural Isomerism

Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but with a different structural formula

Chain Isomerism

  • 4 or more carbon atoms

  • Different chain arrangements

Position Isomerism

  • Functional group situated in different position on carbon chain

Functional Group Isomerism

  • Same molecular formula, but different functional groups

  • Different homologoues series

Stereoisomerism

  • Same structural formula

  • Differ in atom

  • Two kinds

    • E/Z

    • Optical

      • Not required

E/Z Isomerism

  • No free rotation due to \(\pi\) bond

  • E

    • Different sides (Entgegen)

  • Z

    • “Z”ame “Z”ide (Zusammen)
