Due to the linear dispersion of the edge states and the fact that they are confined to the edge, for 2D materials the edge states can be treated like a 1D system. Using the edge state dispersion (equation 8), the current due to edge state transport can be found using equation 3. Since the system can be treated as 1D, the form of the I-V curve will have the same form as that of figure 2. However, due to the nature of the edge states, the current will may  also be spin locked, polarized,  which gives topologically unique RTD's an extra degree of freedom compared to conventional RTD's.
