We can see from Fig.6 that the edge states are very close to the zero energy point. The winding number is invariant under adiabatically deformation of Hamiltonian. There are two ways to change the winding number. First one is to pull the circle at $d_x,d_y$ plane through the origin, which corresponds to closing bandgap. Second one is to lift the circle out of plane and put it back at somewhere enclosing the origin, which corresponds to symmetry breaking.
