Next steps towards more openness at ZALF

As ZALF

As  ZALF is at the finish sprint in rotation  forthe 2016  Leibniz evaluation, enhancing quality and quantity of the publishing research  output is a matter  of main concern. moment.  In addition, the proportion of Open Access open access  publications is requested - requested,  but not  not  assessed-  by the evaluation committee.

Data Open Data  are not being evaluated. evaluated, so far.  Nevertheless, the data mangement management  department of ZALF has received more received more  requests about registering data in 2014 and 2015 than before. The before. The  inclusion ofZALF  Open Research Data and ZALF publications  into the Thomson Reuters Data Citation Index commercial data bases  and information events non-profit repositories  might be a reason for rising awareness for Open Science. However, we have been asked if registered Open Data are collected in the research

Forthcoming  informationsystem, which is not the case. If Open Data was treated like publications, funding  and collaborations, more researchers might see a benefit and recognition for their additional effort.

Where justified objections for example against Open Data arise, other solutions such as open metadata can be found. Easy to use Easy-to-use  tools for publication and  data management anddata  registration are crucial and need to be promoted. Technical Further technical  solutions need to be implemented to facilitate the scientist's scientists’  worklife and to reduce their workload during data submission. Aim the workload. An aim  is to capture the long tail of data research information  and make the so-called dark data which are difficult to find available to other scientists (Heidorn 2008).

A data policy has (Heidorn, 2008). And as policies have  been a means to promote Open Data Science  at several German institutions (Göttingen, HUB, ...) and institutions,  ZALF is currently preparing one. However, detailed workflows are being included the ZALF a  data policy, which slows down policy in addition to  the process of implementing it. Policies can have different targets like rising awareness, committing existing Open Access policy. A challenge all service departments will accept gladly  to something or regulating workflows.
