Because the mass never changes but the luminosity does, the mass/luminosity ratio of the galaxy will change with time. In order to find out if we can create a mass/luminosity ratio of an average of 19.99 $19.99$  (from the above mass/luminosity ratios of the 26 galaxies), we have to vary the timescales of the IMF. At first we wanted to perform a rudimentary analysis of the IMF by using a galaxy that was very young - none of the stars had turned off the main sequence. This means that all of the stellar mass was contributing to the total luminosity of the galaxy. This was a simplified version of the IMF in order to understand how more complicated IMFs work.
