In order to find r in equation 1, I needed to find r in meters. In order to do this, I had to convert from arc second to radians by multiplying by $4.84813681109762 \cdot 10^-6 \textrm{ radian/arc second}$, convert from radian to parsec by multiplying by the distance to the galaxy, and than by multiplying by $3.09 \cdot 10^16 \textrm{ meters/parsec}$.
