Note that $U_{1}$ represents the filament voltage in this diagram, and not the small voltage used to control emission of electrons. In fact, grid 1 is not included at all in the F-H set-up for Mercury, since the small voltage used to control electron emission is not critical to the experiment. $U$ corresponds to the accelerating voltage, $U_{2}$, and $U_{GA}$ corresponds to the retarding voltage, $U_{3}$ and $U_{2}$ were once again connected to a constant current/voltage source with variable voltage. Once the optimal settings for $U_{3}$ were found, the voltage was held constant, and the accelerating voltage $U_{2}$ was varied with time.
