The "age of Big Data" is upon us and many industries have already started embracing it. The transportation industry stands much to gain of large data analysis due to it's complexity and pervasiveness in daily, daily life,  but this inertia is also one of the greatest challenges to the of big data initiates. Transitionary technologies may, however, be the answer to kick-start the migration to smarter roads and better understanding of our transportation needs and environment today. This paper presents in detail a practical framework for implementation of an automated, high-resolution, video-based traffic-analysis system, particularly geared towards road safety analysis and traffic flow studies. This system collects large amounts of microscopic traffic flow data from ordinary video cameras and includes tools for studying basic traffic flow measures as well as more advanced, pro-active safety measures.
