Oh my god the future is exciting, but only if Mike Judge is wrong is his depiction of the future in the KICK ASS flick Idiocracy. So here's what needs to have happened, science needs to do a much better job at handling the media. It's unbelievable the fucking goons that know all their science from the dentist's restroom; a digested and ravaged depiction of a lot of smart people working really hard. The brightest future one can imagine is a well informed popular opinion of science and its general good. This is the responsibility of the scientists and  There are a lot of cool emerging ideas, but as time marches we will which of them stick. The current fragmented and isolated scientific hot beds spattered across the globe are going to NEED to work together solve our generations problems. The problems are more complex, the design spaces are larger, the compute power is more demanding, .. oh yea, big data. A globally connected scientific infrastructure is the future, but some things need to happen first.   You're going to use, tolerate, and support software because if you don't it's going to suck.    Coming from the materials science space, this fascinates the shit out of me. Materials science designs new and improvement materials for everything ever in forever. Materials are so pervasive in our lives that epochs in history are carved out by the stone, iron, and steel age. Materials science has morphed from an combination   I think increasingly most sciences are becoming very interdisciplinary. Niches aren't as nicely carved out   The biggest transition we will see is in the language of science itself.  You're all data scientists  The older software tools speak a creole, they are universally understood piece of software that has adopted critical mass, but these tools weren't built for science! This is a problem right? We trust this software, we use it everyday, or something like it. We share pictures on Facebook that are automatically tagged for your contact list and you can have to spend a whole god damn day deleting Linkedin invitations because it automatically synced your entire Google contacts list (not that I know anyone that happened to..). But, then we use it improperly for science, then we hate software, then we thing everyone is bad peoples, then we hates it. The cool thing is that if you are putting your science   The newest classes of scientists live in a future that is mobile, social superbug that is destined to infect everything in the future.  What's the point. Don't fucking worry about it, we got this, just let us have fun.
