\subsection{Aims and Goals of this Enterprise.}  Open access publishing and open access data is a burgeoning trend and is the catlyst for research and the advancement of knowledge in such a manner that with the Internet, distances spanning countries are not limiting research.  Inherent in open access, and for open access to work, there is a need to document and catelogue catalogue  "metadata" surrounding the research finding. With the advent of 'omics and big data it is not sufficient to publish a finding based on the data without properly document how one reached the discovery. Further, making the data accessible to the community as well as the research findings in an open access form is now mandatory for research that is publically funded. This includes funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Australian Research Council (ARC). Underpinning this, is the need for reproducible research. There are many tools, publishing repositories, databases that are becoming available to facilitate reproducible research. \textit{GigaScience} is one of the publishing houses that is pushing the frontiers of publishing research, research data and research methods.
