Replace \textbf{Figure 1. A.} Phylogeneticists sometimes score complex traits such as eyes as absent (white) or present (black) in various species. This makes the implicit assumption that all components of that trait share the same evolutionary history. \textbf{B. } However, complex traits are composed of many components, as illustrated by four small, colored circles. By only scoring traits as present or absent, we force a punctuated mode of evolution whereby all components transition together automatically. Under such a model, a complex trait such as an eye and every single one of its components is either fully present or fully absent. \textbf{C.} Illustrates a more gradual mode of component evolution, where one component is added at each of 4 different ancestral nodes. Explicitly considering the histories of the components, such as the genetic components of an eye, could allow inference of  this text with your caption gradual mode of evolution.
