_Kirrobacter_ (Kir.ro.bac'ter. Gr. adj. _kirros_, orange-tawny; Gr. adj. _bacter_, rod; N.L. n. _Kirrobacter_, orange-tawny colored rod)  Gram-negative, non-spore forming oval pleomorphic  bacteria. Strictly aerobic and chemoheterotrophic. Contains carotenoids, but not bacteriochlorophyll _a_. The major respiratory quinone is ubiquinone 10, the dominant phospholipds are phosphatidylglycerol, sphingoglycolipid, and phophatidylthanolamine. The genus is located in a sub-clade within the _Erythrobacteraceae_ family. The type species is _Kirrobacter mercurialis_.
