Reflective Infrared

Reflective IR works by sending an IR signal (800-1000 nm) and retrieving the returned signal with an IR detector. These light sensors function even in ambient light as there is little IR source and are quite sensitive as the detector is designed for a narrow range of wavelengths\cite{M.R.Emami:2014}. They are useful for determining the presence of an object without touching it as they measure the amount of light that is reflected back from an object. Measuring more light coming back indicates that an object was in the way to reflect it back, though this system only works within a very short detection range\cite{LearningMediaLabsMIT}. The reflective IR setup is appropriate for detecting the presence of the candlelights as this occurs at short distances and the setup is quite simple.
