To validate our method we have tested two possible trade-offs between optical magnification and throughput and compared the automatic detection to manual scoring. In addition, we characterized the phenomenology of feeding under several steady state conditions (i.e., fixed food concentration) and in the presence of controlled dynamic manipulations of food availability. We confirmed that the rate pharyngeal pumping increases with the concentration of available food and that bursts of continuous pumping are interspersed with intervals of inactivity \cite{refs?}. We show that the rate pumping as a function of food availability is modulated predominantly through the durations of bursts of pumping events, while the distribution of inactive intervals remains largely unchanged. We demonstrate that adapting to a shift in the availability of food requires NNN sec/min. finally, we show that responses to dynamic feeding conditions can/cannot be approximated by a linear response
