The problem with the current indexing scale is that it is subjective. The assignment of the index can be inconsistent depending on who is assigning it. The severity index is based on the percentage of the infected part of the fruit with respect to the whole fruit. This can be seen as an image segmentation problem where the pixels of the infected portions are extracted from the pixels of the fruit.     This paper explores the use of image processing and machine learning to develop a tool that measures the severity of the disease in cacao pods. Paving the way to providing meaningful assessments, implementing appropriate management strategies, and increasing yields of the cacao.<>
