# Introduction  Large volumes of food are wasted in Dutch households. Of the 800 million kilograms of food that are thrown away in the Netherlands each year, with 38 percent households are responsible for the single-largest contribution along the food supply chain \cite{soethoudt_monitor_2014,ministerie_van_economische_zaken_beleidsbrief_2013}. Food that could have potentially been eaten is connected to tremendous financial and environmental implications. The annual Dutch food waste equals 2.4 billion Euro of financial losses and is associated with 3.5 percent of the total Dutch CO2 CO~2~  emissions. On a per capita basis, people thus dispose 50 kilograms of food per person per year. This equals 155 Euro and represents 14 percent of the annual food purchases. The severe environmental impact of food waste had been recognized by the Dutch government \cite{voedingscentrum_voedselverspilling_2014}. An ambitious goal has been set to reduce food waste by 20 percent in 2015 in comparison to 2009 \cite{ministerie_van_economische_zaken_beleidsbrief_2013}.   Aside this background, in my master's thesis I study how two different groups of households negotiate with the occurrence of food waste, what measures they take to prevent or reduce food waste, and how contingencies posed from everyday life affect and counteract intentions to not waste food.
