\subsection{Societal background or problem}  Globally, about one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, amounting to equalling an estimated amount of  1.3 billion tons pear year \cite{gustavsson_global_2011}. In Europe and North America, consumers waste around 95-115 kg/year, compared to only 6-11 kg/year in sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia. Not These are results of a study commissioned by the UN FAO to raise awareness on the dramatic situation of inefficient food utilisation. Food wastage not  only does this pose poses  an ethical dilemma for regarding  people suffering from hunger, food wastage Westerhoven2013Bepalingbut  has severe significant  environmental implications. implications: primarily the unnecessary use of land, water, labour and energy to produce food doomed for spillage.   With food wastage representing a global problem, many countries have taken the challenge to significantly reduce food wastage. In the Netherlands, the government aims at reducing food wastage by 20\% until 2015. However, there are only a limited amount of studies dedicated to food wastage in Dutch households. A widely cited study was done by \citep{Westerhoven2013Bepaling}. They key findings were:  \begin{itemize}  \item About 14\% of the purchased food is thrown away by households;  \item This equals € 2,5 billion;  \item or € 150 per person per year, or 50 kg;  \end{itemize}  By using a sorting analysis it was found that the most likely wasted products are milk and dairy, bread, vegetables, fruits, sauces, oil and fats.   A comparable study had been performed in 2010 (source).  In comparison to 2013, the amount of avoidable food waste has only changed marginally (37 kg in 2010 versus 35 kg in 2013).  %In  Europe, 28.940 km^{2} of land are thus used without purpose, equalling 3/4 of the total available surface area of the Netherlands. % Other environmental impacts  %useless consumption of energy, water and land and the contribution to GHG emissions. On a per-capita basis, the majority of food is wasted in industrialised countries.

\end{enumerate}  % Short elaboration on the research questions. If required, clarify your questions and you can briefly state how you approach the problem theoretically and methodically.  The first question addresses the relationship between daily, recurring activities of households members and food waste spillage. It is investigated which of these activities have an enforcing (diminishing) influence, such as shopping planning behaviour, mode of transportation used to go for shopping. People have different options to dispose food leftovers which has different implications on the environmental effects and the requirements of the waste collection and treatment infrastructure. The second question aims at finding out the sources of food wastage, i.e. the phyisical physical  location of the disposal of food.
