\subsection{Identification of the gap in literature}  % what hasn’t been done yet? This is not necessarily exhaustive. A more in-depth literature survey can be part of the research work.  Several studies estimated the amount of food wastage for different regions and stages in the food supply chain \cite{20713403,gustavsson_global_2011,van_westerhoven_eindrapport_2010,van_westerhoven_bepaling_2013}. However, yet little work has been done to translate these numbers into the environmental impacts regarding water spoilage, land use and energy consumption. A study done by Mileu Centraal (2012) expressed each kilo of wasted food as 1.3 liter wasted gasoline.  Several studies estimated the amount of food that is wasted per household per year and translated this into the environmental impacts on water spillage, land use and energy consumption. However, yet little is %is  known on the actual act of food waste spillage. This research aims at filling this gap by addressing the following questions: % Based on this, the research aim, question and optional sub-questions and research framework.  In acknowledgement of the existing shortcomings this research aims at contributing to the following two main questions:  \begin{enumerate}  \item What are the environmental implications of food wastage produced in Dutch households?  \item How do daily practices of households affect food waste spillage?  \item %\item  Where in the household does food wastage occur? \item Under what circumstances does food wastage occur? %\item  %\item What is the difference in effectiveness between individual coaching and the online platform?  \end{enumerate}  % Short elaboration on the research questions. If required, clarify your questions and you can briefly state how you approach the problem theoretically and methodically.  The first question addresses the environmental effects of wasted, thus unutilised, food on unnecessary water and land use, energy consumption and labour requirements. Providing accurate estimates requires detailed data on the different food categories that have significantly different environmental impats. The second question aims at contributing to a better understanding of the underlying reasons for food waste ocurrence. It will be investigated what the  relationship is  between daily, recurring activities of households members and food waste spillage. It is investigated ocurrence. Furthermore, it will be analysed  which of these activities have an enforcing (diminishing) influence, such as e.g.  shopping planning behaviour, mode of transportation typically  used to go for shopping. shopping, etc.   Gaining a deeper understanding of households' daily practices is likely to provide further insights that can help contribute to a better understanding under what circumstances food wastage in households occurs, and where it occurs.  People have different options to dispose food leftovers which has different implications on for  the environmental effects and the requirements of the waste collection and treatment infrastructure. The second question aims at finding out the sources of food wastage, i.e. the physical location of the disposal of food. Does food wastage primarily occurs  \section{Theory}  Food loss refers to the decrease in edible food mass throughout the part of the supply chain that specifically leads to edible food for human consumption, i.e. production, post-harvest and processing stages in the food supply chain \cite{20713403}. Food losses are specified and referred to as food wastage if it is related to retailers' and consumers' behaviour.
