\subsection{Societal background or problem}  Globally, about one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, amounting to 1.3 billion tons pear year. Food year \cite{gustavsson_global_2011}. Not only does this pose an ethical dilemma for people suffering from hunger, food  wastage and losses have has  severe impacts on energy losses, GHG emissions environmental implications: useless consumption of energy, water  and land use water spillage \cite{gustavsson_global_2011}. and the contribution to GHG emissions.  On a per-capita basis, the major part majority  of food is wasted in industrialised countries. In Europe and North America, consumers waste around 95-115 kg/year, in sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia only 6-11 kg/year. In Europe, 28.940 km2 of land are used without purpose, equaling 3/4 of the total available area of the Netherlands.
