This paper examines the impacts of increased weather extremes caused by climate change on African food systems. The specific focus lies on adaptation measures that can be applied by smallholder farmers to protect their livelihood and to make their food production more resilient against the effects weather extremes. The measures considered are, amongst others, the potentials for sustainable agroforestry, crop responses, sowing dates and seed purchase decisions. The adoption potentials for these adaptation strategies are evaluated taking into consideration regional environmental and socio-economic differences.  \cite{Deressa_2009}  \cite{Zinyengere_2013}  \cite{Waha_2013}  \cite{Nordhagen_2013}
