\section{Challenges for agroforestry adoption}  Despite its potential to adapt to changing climate conditions, the adoption rate of agroforestry technologies in Africa is still low \cite{ndjeunga2005uptake}. This section discussess the challenges for agroforestry that needs to be overcome for a widespread adoption. Thereby two cases have to be distinguished: situations in which agroforestry has not been adopted at all and situations in which agroforestry has been adopted but abandoned after some time \cite{Dahlquist_2007,Kiptot_2007}.  \subsection{Barriers for adoption}  A lack of adoption leads to the presumption of existing barriers that hinder smallholder farmers to adopt agroforestry methods. Using the schematic relationship developed by the 'Edinburgh Study of Decision Making on Farms' (see Figure X), smallholder farmer's choices are dependent on personal factors, i.e. attitudes to farming and objectives, external farm factors that together influence the decision making process \cite{Willock_1999}.
