By looking at existing studies we want to investigate the relevancy of each of these factors for smallholder farmer's choices in Sub-Saharan Africa. A survey performed by \citet{Deressa_2009} amongst farmers in the Nile Basin of Ethiopia indicates that failures to adapt are primarily a result of lack of information, lack of financial resources, shortage of labour and land, and poor potential for irrigation methods. For agroforestry specifically,\citet{Mbow_2014b} identifies lack of public policies and unwilligness from the farmers as barriers.   A survey performed by \citet{Rusinga_2014} on smallholder communal famers of Zimbabwe revealed that most farmers received information on adaptive strategies that do not include agroforestry but emphasise evidence and manipulation of seasonal rainfall variability, plantng of drought resistant crops, conservation farming methods, early planting and irrigation.
