Figure 8. This figure shows the relationship between transverse separation (rp) ($ r_{p}$)  and the velocity offset $\Dellta $\Delta  v$. Much of the data is clustered at the bottom right of the figure. This is because of a geometric effect, where the area in an annulus with rp-lower $ r_{p}$-lower  = 50 & rp-higher $ r_{p}$-higher  is much greater than for rp-lower $ r_{p}$-lower  = 0 & rp-higher $ r_{p}$-higher  = 50.
