Seagrass beds are hotspots of diversity (cite macrobe studies) and provide homes to many rare/endemic species. Likely also harbor much unexplored microbial diversity. Area of marine microbial eukaryotes is not well studied, and the diversity of microbial eukaryotes in general is undercharacterized. We aim to identify and characterize microeukaryotic diversity within seagrass beds. Microeukaryotes are important in ocean ecosystems (predator, prey, biogeochemical cycling of nutrients etc.).  make sure to mention this somewhere:http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1758-2229.12282/full  -looked at microbial community in biofilm of Enhalus (both bacteria and eukaryotes--18s--) Their study suggests   that seagrasses could be vectors for coral pathogens  http://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.1001419  - this has some #s on currently known diversity + estimates in a section on "The Unknown Vastness of Protist Richness"    Characterizing microbial eukaryotic diversity in seagrass beds is a labor-intensive process, requiring much time and multiple sampling efforts returning fresh samples. Therefore, we will focus our initial efforts on Zostera marina beds in Bodega Bay, California, where we have access to the Bodega Marine Laboratory and the required permits for collection. A variety of culturing conditions will be used to target fungi, amoeba  Fungal associations have been found to have beneficial effects on terrestrial plant fitness; for example, mycorrhizal fungi are involved in facilitating phosphorus and nitrogen uptake for their hosts.   It is estimated that there are more than at least  10,000 species of  marine fungi fungi,  but only around 550 currently have cultured representatives \cite{Jones_2011}, also Jones 2009 \cite{Jones_2011}.  marine Marine  fungi as represent a vast,  untapped natural products resource  http://www.mdpi.com/1660-3397/14/1/19 reservoir of bioactive secondary metabolites \cite{Imhoff_2016}.
