A silicon based Raman laser could end up being a perfect solution for integrating optics and photonics into silicon chips. Unfortunately, the silicon Raman laser currently requires a significantly more powerful laser and complex experimental setup to generate. If scientists could somehow miniaturize the process down to the nanometer scale and simplify it to be efficient and easily repeatable, then it has great potential for working alongside existing chip technology.  Silicon based lasers can play a significant role in CMOS integrated chip photonics, but not for a few decades at least. Advancements in technology have been made relatively recently, but the large single-laser experiments appear to be a long way off from making an impact in the silicon chip industry.
