Butt-coupling scheme was able to achieve bandwidth greater than 4.5 GHz at 1550 nm and vertical coupling scheme was reported to have a bandwidth of 1.5 Ghz at 1550 nm. Germanium photodetectors have shown to be useful in the current fiber optical range of the near infrared as well as effectively bridging the gap between the electrical circuit and photonic circuit built from CMOS technology. This is still an active area of research and can continue to improve by fabrication techniques improving lattice mismatch as well as surface roughness.
