Graphene shows interesting characteristics and applications by virtue of being tunable by applying a voltage. Conductivity of graphene is directly tunable by its dependence on chemical potential. Chemical potential determines which transitions can occur in graphene and in turn determines the conductivity. Graphene integrated onto waveguides and modulators show promise that graphene can be integrated onto chips and leave smaller footprints than silicon based technologies.
