\section{Introduction}  The \textsc{skv} algorithm was introduced as a method of onset extraction in a model of auditory auditory signal processing \cite{Coath_2005}, and as part of a model of auditory feature extraction, that exhibited a range of desirable properties as well as some features that made it biophysically plausible \cite{Denham_2005} \cite{Coath_2007}. The method has subsequently been used as an integral part in a range  of contexts including auditory  salience detection, beat trackingapplications  \cite{Coath_2009} and studies of infant speech production \cite{Warlaumont_2016} \cite{Warlaumont_2016}.
