\subsubsection{Areas of sky covered by FIRST and SDSS}  An important factor in the use of the VLASS Pilot for transient science is the availability of previous observations in the FIRST dataset. dataset, and corresponding optical imaging in SDSS.  Figures~\ref{fig:first-coverage-north} and \ref{fig:first-coverage-south} depict the coverage of FIRST in the Northern and Southern Galactic  skies respectively. The SDSS coverage corresponds to essentially the same areas, as shown in Fig.~\ref{fig:sdss-boss-footprint}. For the LST range that the majority of the pilot survey will use, the Southern Galactic sky area centered on SDSS Stripe-82 at the celestial equator is highly preferred. There are around 2000 deg$^2$ covered by FIRST and SDSS in this region.
