\section{Method}  Stems were aproximated as truncated cone meshes, represented using quadratic tetrahedral elements. Each (fully grown) mesh was devided into elements covering one fifth the radious, one fifth the height and one sixteeth of the circunfrence. The overall taper of the trucated cone was aproximated via regression of slenderness ratios and stocking from experimental data from Waghorn et al. In order to acomidate these time dependent changes, the mesh needs to be 'grown', here time is treated in descrete steps.
