We can get an impression of what is happening to produce the minimum in $\Delta$ seen in Figure 4 if we look at the pdfs calculated for $c = 5.2$ m/s (close to the the minimum) compared to those calculated for $c = 4.4$ and $c = 6.0$ m/s (values $\pm$ 0.8 m/s on either side of the minimum), seen in Figure 5. In that figure we see that for $c = 5.2$ m/s (centre plot) $\phi(dP)$ (solid blue line) and $\phi(dP_+ + dP_-) (dashed blue line) coincide closely in their peak regions and that $\phi(\rho cdU)$ (solid red line) and $\phi(dP_+ - dP_-)$ (dashed red line) are similarly close in their peak regions. For the non-minimum values of $c$ (the left and right plots) the fit between the solid and dashed distributions is less close. This closeness is what is being quantified in the calculation of $\Delta$.
