Many kind of failures can create betatron coupling in the machine and therefore increase the vertical beam size.   In addition some problems, like beam instabilities, can blow up the beam horizontally as well.   We measure the beam size at a dipole beamline with a dedicated monitor (ref).   beam-blow-up Beam-blow-up  events are recorded when the sigma is vertically above 15$\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ or horizontally above 100$\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ for more than one minute. The events stop if the size is below the given limits.  Most of the measured 'beam-blow-up' events so far had been induced by a deterioration of the monitor after more than a year of operation.
