For a dust devil that passes right over a sensor, the radial distance $r(t)$ as a function of time is $r(t) = \upsilon t$, assuming $t$ runs from negative to positive values and is zero right as the devil's center passes over the sensor. For a devil with closest approach distance $b \ne 0$, $r(t) = \dfrac{b}{\cos\left[ \arctan\left( ^{\upsilon t}/_{b} \right) \right]}$.
