After adding the organic matter amendment to soil, we tracked the flow of  $^{13}$C from $^{13}$C-xylose or $^{13}$C-cellulose into microbial DNA over  time using DNA-SIP (Figure~\ref{fig:setup}). The amendment consisted of  compounds representative found in  of plant biomass including cellulose, lignin, sugars found in hemicellulose, amino acids, and inorganic nutrients (see Supplemental  Information (SI)).
